About the department
The department of Assamese was introduced in Mankachar College from the very beginning of its set up in 1970. Initially the department offered Assamese as MIL and Elective subject in the Pre University level and Degree level. In 1982-83 the department introduced Assamese as Honours subject. The department has a good number of reference books in the Departmental Library as well as more than 4000 books in the central library with Text and reference.
Being Assamese the state language in Assam, a huge number of students used to take Assamese as MIL. So the student strength is always higher both in H.S and Under graduate leves in the department. The increasing number of students taking Major in Assamese in recent years added a new dimension to the department.
Mrs Delowara Khandakar was the first person to head the Department. After her resignation Marsia Khandakar was appointed as head of the department in 1972. After her retirement Dr. Sailendra Narayan Thakuria was appointed as head of the department in 2006. A good number of quality faculties of the department already retired or gone in another establishment.
The department used to facilitate and encourage research activity of the students who are undertaking Major course in Fourth semester by guiding and taking out as a part of field study. Also the department use to organize literary activities for the better cause of the department.
